About this map

An interactive travel-time map (isochrone map) of Oslo. The colour bands show how long it takes to reach the rest of the city by public transport — metro, tram, bus, train and boat — from a chosen start.

Click anywhere and the start snaps to the nearest real stop; the map then shows that stop's actual travel times. Drag and scroll to zoom. Toggle Show stop catchments to see which area maps to which stop.

How to read it

  • Red (0–15 min) — reachable quickly on foot or by a short transit hop. Notice the red follows the metro and tram lines, so you travel far fast along them.
  • Orange/yellow (30–60 min) — outer districts and suburbs.
  • Green/blue (60 min+) — Marka (the forest) and areas with little transit coverage, which genuinely have few nearby stops.

Method

Travel times come from the Entur journey planner (the engine behind national journey planning in Norway) for departures at 08:00 on a normal weekday, and include walking to/from stops, waiting and transfers.

The map is precomputed from 120 real stops across Oslo (all metro/tram/train stations plus major bus hubs). A click snaps to the nearest of these and shows its field; each cell is coloured by the faster of transit or direct walking from that stop. All computation runs in your browser — no data is fetched live.

Times are a snapshot for one departure and vary through the day. Areas deep in Marka have no nearby stops and are shown as effectively unreachable by transit.
